I vividly recall watching many of my peers receive care packages from their families while I was in college at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. As a recent alumni of foster care, my dorm mailbox was typically barren. There was not much that I could do to fill the resulting void. It was yet an additional challenge that students with limited familial support had to endure. My prior experience in facing an empty mailbox is what has driven DaCasiom to partner with Foster Progress here in Chicago to send care packages to college students who have formerly experienced foster care. While we know that this is but a small token in a larger pool of unmet needs, not having to encounter an empty mailbox at least provides a semblance of hope. We are looking forward to growing this program in the coming years!
